Utilizing AI in the Clinical Setting

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) is getting a lot of attention in healthcare circles, and it’s no wonder: The possibilities for this powerful technology seem virtually unlimited. But while AI certainly holds the potential for improving diagnostics, treatments and quality of life for patients, one of its more practical clinical applications — ambient clinical voice, or ambient listening — may also be a game-changer for physicians who use it.

According to Robert A. Dowling, MD, “Physicians in all specialties continue to struggle with burnout, and the burden of clinical documentation — exacerbated by time-consuming workflows in the electronic health record (EHR) — is known to be a major contributor to this epidemic.”1 Ambient listening is designed to lend a digital helping hand to providers who struggle to balance meaningful patient encounters with requisite clerical work. The AI-driven tool helps by listening to conversations between doctors and patients and creating an encounter summary and clinical note based on what it hears.2

How it works: In most cases, providers use an ambient listening app on their phone. They pull up the app, confirm patient consent, start the recording and the clinical encounter proceeds as usual. When the encounter is complete, the physician then stops the recording. The tool distills the clinical encounter into key data points to record in the patient’s chart; physicians review the summary, add or alter information as needed, and finalize the note, which can be, in many cases, seamlessly transferred to EHRs.

Physician burnout and shortages are significant problems without simple solutions, but ambient listening may offset the mounting administrative burden physicians face and allow them to focus time on what matters most. The tool helps doctors engage with their patients more effectively, reduces clerical work more efficiently and helps pinched providers make the best use of their limited time.

Freed

Freed’s medical AI scribe listens to clinical conversations and writes notes for providers. It is designed to lighten the administrative workload and alleviate the burden of spending long, extra hours charting patient encounters, returning providers’ time back to them.

More than 17,000 clinicians use Freed’s HIPPA-compliant, secure software. Ease of use includes clicking the capture visit button; ending and editing the transcript; copying and sending notes to the patient; and pasting notes into the EHR. With the power of AI, Freed learns providers’ unique style and preferred format with every edit they make, making future transcripts more aligned to their preferences.

Freed costs $99 per month for individuals or custom pricing for groups. For more information, visit getfreed.ai.
