Young Adults Needed to Make Health Law Successful
- By BSTQ Staff
The success of the newly operational state health insurance exchanges depends heavily on insuring healthy, young adults to balance the risk of covering older, less healthy consumers. However, according to a recent survey from 2013, only 27 percent of young people are aware of the coverage options that went into effect on Oct. 1. “I think it’s fair to say most young people will buy coverage if they consider it to be affordable and/or necessary, but until we see premiums, I think it’s going to be really difficult for young people to assess whether this is affordable relative to all the other expenses they have,” said Linda Rowings, chief compliance offer at United Benefit Advisors.
If healthy, young adults do not enroll in the new exchanges, health insurance premiums could increase substantially.
